Montecito's Freeway Lanes Finish This Winter. Coast Village Road's Detour Runs Into 2028.

October 22, 2026

"So much has changed and yes we are redoing the entire freeway there," Santa Barbara County Association of Governments Executive Director Marjorie Kirn told KEYT this month, describing the Hot Springs Road and Cabrillo Boulevard interchange. "You aren't going to recognize it for a few years."

That same KEYT report brought the news many Montecito drivers have waited years for. The current Highway 101 widening segment through Montecito, with its new carpool lanes and ramps, is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2026. The year-end date covers the lanes, though. The exits that feed Coast Village Road run on a much longer schedule. That matters this season because nearly every community date on Montecito's late-fall calendar, from Halloween on Saturday to the tree lighting on December 3, takes place on or near that street.

The year-end date covers the lanes

The project's construction bulletin at SBRoads lists both Cabrillo Boulevard off-ramps as closed "until summer 2028."

Direction Closed ramp Posted detour Closed until
Northbound 101 Cabrillo Blvd. off-ramp Hermosillo Rd. off-ramp Summer 2028
Southbound 101 Cabrillo Blvd. off-ramp Spring/Olive Mill Rd. off-ramp Summer 2028
Southbound 101 Los Patos Way off-ramp None Permanently closed

According to SBCAG's March 2026 announcement, the Los Patos Way closure was the first change when the final Santa Barbara segment began. The ramp's low railroad clearance is the reason. That announcement scheduled the segment to run through 2028 and described a full rebuild of the Cabrillo interchange, with two bridges and new right-hand ramps. In October, Kirn gave KEYT a shorter estimate of "about another year" for reconfiguring the lanes and ramps at Hot Springs and Cabrillo. The posted ramp closures still run to summer 2028.

Put the two schedules side by side and Montecito gets a new pair of carpool lanes this winter while keeping its northbound detour onto Hermosillo through this holiday season and the next. The Coast Village tree lighting in December 2027 is also on track to happen before the posted Cabrillo reopening.

The work is not quiet in the meantime. The SBRoads update for October 11 through 24 said crews would remove K-rail in Montecito ahead of pavement grinding. That grinding was expected to start in mid-October, weather permitting, and would be done at night. The bulletin says plainly that it "will be noisy." Overnight ramp closures at Sheffield Drive, San Ysidro Road, Olive Mill Road and Posilipo Lane come and go in the two-week bulletins. The project's policy is not to close consecutive ramps in the same direction at the same time, so a neighboring exit stays open.

Where the Hermosillo exit lands

KEYT reported in April that a temporary traffic signal was working at Coast Village Road and Hermosillo Drive. The station tied the signal to the northbound Cabrillo closure, which moved freeway exits to Hermosillo. By July, the Montecito Journal was calling the light "purportedly temporary." The paper also passed along a statement from the Montecito Community Connect Group that "the gridlock on Coast Village Road due to the new traffic signal extends the full length of Montecito from Sheffield past the tennis courts approaching Salinas and up and along Hot Springs, up San Ysidro and on to East Valley Road."

In the October KEYT segment, a regular driver hoped the finished freeway would clear up surface-street traffic and keep homebound drivers on the 101 instead of turning onto Coast Village. The new lanes may help with some of that. As long as the northbound Cabrillo exit stays closed, though, the posted route for drivers heading to that end of town still ends at Hermosillo, at the west end of the street that hosts Montecito's holiday calendar.

Halloween on the busiest stretch

Ghost Village Road + the Great Pumpkin Challenge takes over Coast Village Road on Saturday, October 31, from 3 to 6 p.m. The Coast Village Association invites families and trick-or-treaters of all ages to come in costume. The Great Pumpkin has been sitting outside Renaud's since October 12, and guesses on its weight are still open. Renaud's is listed at 1187 Coast Village Road, Suite 7.

Two of the doors along the route are new this fall:

  • Margaret O'Leary opened at 1235 Coast Village Road, Suite C. The Montecito Journal covered the opening celebration for the Irish-born designer's employee-owned knitwear company, which the paper said has 13 locations nationwide. According to Noozhawk, the opening night benefited Girls Inc. of Greater Santa Barbara.
  • Marfa Stance has announced that its Montecito store is open at 1024H Coast Village Road. The announcement is dated September 2026.

The long-running dining stops are all still there. Visit Santa Barbara's Coast Village Road dining guide, dated October 9, 2026, still profiles Lucky's at 1279 Coast Village Road, Honor Bar at 1255, Jeannine's, Tre Lune, Renaud's, and Bettina at the Montecito Country Mart. Jeannine's is at 1253 Coast Village Road, next door to Honor Bar. On a Halloween afternoon with the Hermosillo exit feeding the same blocks, a dinner reservation along this stretch also means a parking plan.

November 7 moves up to the Upper Village

The following Saturday, the community calendar moves away from the detour. The Montecito Association's Beautification Day starts with 9 a.m. check-in on Saturday, November 7, in front of Tecolote Book Shop in the Upper Village. Volunteers spread out to pick up trash and then come back to the Upper Village for awards, a hot dog and chili lunch cooked by the Montecito Firefighters, and live music.

This year, Montecito's six districts compete in a litter pickup, with each team led by a Montecito Association board captain. There is also a special cleanup and improvement project along the Hammonds Beach Trail. All volunteers check in at the Upper Village, including those headed to the trail. The children's poster deadline was October 28. Under this year's theme, "Our Village, Our Home," the posters go up in local shop windows during the week before the event.

Late November at Lotusland

The end of the month moves inland to Cold Spring Road. Lotusland holds members-only Holiday Garden Walks on Wednesday, November 25, and Saturday, November 28, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Each date pairs a walk through the garden with holiday shopping. On Saturday, December 5, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and Lotusland hold an adult plein-air art class in the garden from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tickets are listed for Lotusland and SBMA members and their guests.

December 3, with the lanes nearly finished

The season comes back to Coast Village Road on Thursday, December 3, from 4 to 6 p.m., for the Coast Village Association's annual tree lighting. The association plans a surprise performance by the Santa Barbara Ballet, the return of the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony quartet, and caroling by the Santa Barbara Madrigals. The invitation explicitly includes families, friends and "four-legged companions."

The lighting starts at 4 p.m. on a Thursday, as the evening commute begins and in the final weeks before the Montecito segment is due to finish. Northbound drivers coming home for it will still use the posted Hermosillo exit, because the Cabrillo off-ramp stays closed until summer 2028. The new carpool lanes are expected by year's end. That exit change, and the traffic it sends onto Coast Village Road, will still be in place for the next tree lighting a year from now.
